DANCE
Dance, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, means "to move your body in a way that goes with the rhythm and style of music that is being played." Dance is one of the ways we express our inward feeling. There are so many reasons why we dance. Some dance because the music that is being played is just too good that they subconsciously start moving their body to it. Others dance to celebrate an event or occurrence of joy.
When I was much more younger than I am now, I found it difficult to dance in a way I wanted to. I just did not possess enough skills as far as dancing was concerned. My movement was mostly off rhythm. Oh! It was frustrating. While I struggled, I had a friend whom could dance from sunrise to sunset without any problem. He was simply a very good dancer. I wondered why he could dance so well and I found it difficult to dance at all. After-all, we were both skinny and all my body parts and organs were functioning as they ought to. I was distraught and agitated. After a long while, I had an idea and it was a very good one. It was a good idea because it worked at the end. I had an idea to ask God to give me the ability to dance very well with the promise that I will only dance to worship Him. I promised to dance in praise to Him at every opportunity I get. It wasn't long after this that I started noticing that I could move my body better to songs. I would then go into my secret dancing room, the bathroom, play some gospel songs, and dance to them. I got excited because what seemed to be very difficult has suddenly become as easy as reciting the alphabets. A lot of my friends didn't (and still do not) understand why I would not dance to songs that do not glorify God but will be quick to dance to songs that does glorify him.
After some time, I pondered in my heart why God answered my prayer quickly and I was made to understand that God is very much interested in our praise, worship, and dance. His word says in Psalm 149:3 that:
"Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp."
God wants us to rejoice in dance (Jeremiah 31:13). His purpose for our lives is to be joyful at all times. It is said that dancing isn't far searched from a joyful heart. In order words, it is easier for a person who is happy to dance than it is for a person in sorrow. Though there will be rough times in our journey on earth, we as children of God should know that victory is guaranteed to us at the end. (Isaiah 59:19, Job 8:7, Isaiah 46:4, Psalms 30:11, Ecclesiastes 3:4).
Every time I think about the word "dance," I always remember the story of King David and Michal, the daughter of Saul (1 Chronicles 15:29 ). She despised him while he was dancing to God and was cursed as a result. A minister in my church once said, "anyone who considers himself/herself too big to dance to God is a descendant of Michal." Whenever people dance in praise to God, you should not make fun of the way they dance. Instead of making fun of them, you ought to thank God that such an individual is not a descendant of Michal but a true child of Christ who doesn't consider himself/herself too big to thank and glorify God for the wondrous things He has done and will still do.
It is a great thing to dance to God. Do this more often and watch out for the testimonies that will cause you to even dance much more. Happy New Year!!!!!!
